What is a virginity check?
A virginity check is an examination to determine whether a woman's hymen is intact. Although it is a very difficult situation for women, a virginity check may be requested in legal cases or by spouses who want to know whether their partner is a virgin.
What is a virginity report?
Virginity checks are performed by gynecologists and forensic doctors. However, only forensic doctors are authorized to issue virginity reports, and they can only do so with a letter from the prosecutor's office. This virginity report is only valid for the examination on that day. This is because it is impossible to know what will happen to the person after the report, and therefore it is not valid for the future.
How to Obtain a Virginity Report?
If the obstetrician-gynecologist has the consent of the person undergoing the examination, they may only provide verbal information to their relatives. If the person brought in for examination is under the age of 18, the examination may be performed if they consent and their family agrees. If the individual is under 18 years of age, the examination results are communicated verbally to their family. If there is a court order, it is considered a legal matter. The virginity report is prepared by forensic medicine physicians working at the Forensic Medicine Institution, and the report is submitted to the court.
How is a virginity check performed?
Virginity examinations should be performed by gynecologists, who are specialists in women's diseases and childbirth. In legal cases, forensic medicine specialists may also perform this examination in some regions. Virginity checks are a very sensitive issue in countries such as ours, and confidentiality is very important in this area. After the examination, the doctor informs the woman who requested the examination of the results verbally. Confidentiality is of great importance in this matter. No verbal information is given to anyone other than the woman who requested the examination, no records are kept, and no information is shared with any health institution or public authority. The virginity check is performed by gynecologists. During the examination, the woman does not feel any pain or discomfort. The patient is placed on the gynecological examination table. In the lithotomy position, i.e., the gynecological examination position, the inner lips are separated from the outer lips, and the hymen is visually examined. Before the examination, the patient is informed about how the examination will be performed. The external labia of the patient lying on the gynecological examination table are held separately by the gynecologist's hands and pulled toward the sides and toward the physician facing the patient. During this process, the patient is asked to strain slightly. During this process, no fingers, cotton swabs, speculums, or any other objects are inserted or attempted to be inserted into the vagina. During a virginity examination, no instruments are used, no fingers are inserted, and the examination is performed only with the eyes. It is not a frightening or painful examination. After the examination, your doctor will inform you of the results verbally. Only an external observation is made. The person does not feel any pain or discomfort during this examination. The structure of the hymen is examined through observation. Is it thick? Fleshy? Thin? Are there any blood vessels? Are there any natural notches extending toward the vagina? Has the hymen been torn? Is there any damage extending into the vagina? All of these can be determined during this examination. No information is given to your family, partner, relatives, or your partner's family. If the woman undergoing the examination gives her consent, then verbal information is given to the people she deems appropriate, in her presence. Obstetricians prioritize patient privacy above all else during hymen examinations.
Where can I get a virginity report?
The structure of the hymen varies from woman to woman. There may be natural notches in the hymen. Sometimes these natural notches may give the impression that virginity has been lost, but anatomically, these natural notches in the hymen do not mean that virginity has been lost. In rare cases, MRI and ultrasound examinations may be combined with a gynecological examination, and state hospitals, private clinics, the Forensic Medicine Institute, and university hospitals may also issue virginity reports. In forensic cases, a committee composed of forensic medicine experts can prepare a virginity report.
