What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a procedure that allows detailed examination of a number of problems that cannot be fully visualized during routine gynecological examinations. During the procedure, problems in the vagina and the entrance to the uterus can be examined in detail, while tissue samples can also be taken. Using a high-resolution camera called a colposcope, the cells, cell changes and tissue thickening in the vagina and uterus can be clearly seen. Many problems in the reproductive organs, which are closely examined thanks to the magnification of the image by the lenses in the colposcope device, can be detected by colposcopy.
Who Needs Colposcopy?
Colposcopy can be performed on any woman who is sexually active and has some complaints. The procedure has no side effects. Since it is not a painful procedure, there is no need for anesthesia. Only if a biopsy needs to be taken during colposcopy, sedation-style anesthesia may be preferred as there may be pain and pain. The most preferred patient groups for colposcopy are as follows:
- Pap smear test abnormalities
- Patients with HPV virus or suspected HPV
- Complaints of postcoital bleeding and bleeding of unknown cause
- Patients with cancerous cells in the uterus or cervix
- Patients who have beaten cancer and continue routine checkups
How Colposcopy is Performed
Colposcopy is performed with the help of a magnifying camera called a colposcope. First, the patient is prepared for a gynecological examination and lies on the examination table. Then sterile material preparation is done. The vagina and cervix are made visible with the instrument called "speculum" that we use in gynecological examination. This area is examined with a colposcope and tissue samples are taken from abnormal areas. The patient may feel a slight discomfort at this time. Apart from this, there is no pain or soreness throughout the procedure. If only a biopsy is performed, the patient may feel some pain and soreness. At this point, local anesthesia or sedation anesthesia may be preferred. If a suspicious finding is detected during the procedure, a sample is taken for pathology. The patient will be informed by the physician according to the results.
Does Pain and Bleeding Occur During and After Colposcopy?
If a tissue sample is taken from the vagina during the colposcopy procedure, mild bleeding may occur. This bleeding may continue as light spotting for a few days. Pain sensation may only occur at the moment the sample is taken. Other than that, no pain or soreness is felt. Colposcopy is a reliable procedure that does not prevent conception and offers detailed imaging. It is sufficient for the patient to be sexually active to have this procedure. There is no special age range. It is very important in the early diagnosis of uterine and cervical cancers and precancerous lesions, especially in HPV patients.
What to Consider After Colposcopy
If a tissue sample was taken during colposcopy, the area may be more sensitive to germs and bacteria. For this reason, it is best to abstain from sexual intercourse for 2 weeks and not to enter the pool and sea. The doctor will also evaluate the patient's own condition after the procedure and provide the necessary information. It is also necessary to pay attention to personal hygiene to protect the area. If there is a special situation, the physician will definitely inform the patient.
